Toothpaste

It is important to use toothpaste or tooth powder (toothpaste powder) for brushing your teeth. The reason is that they help to mechanically clean your teeth, similar to hand wash paste you use for cleaning your hands if they are really dirty.

Fluoride

A word on fluoride. It is vital that your toothpaste or tooth powder contains fluoride. The fact that today so many stories are circulating about bad, unhealthy fluoride can only be explained by conspiracy theories, or – how they are called nowadays – fake news.

“Fluoride can repair teeth that are affected by tooth decay (caries)”

The truth is that fluoride, together with calcium from the saliva, can remineralise the tooth by forming fluorhydroxyapatite, which naturally forms the basic structure of our bones and teeth. Since the 1980s, it is known that fluoride can help to control caries, because fluoride can actually repair teeth that are affected by tooth decay (caries).

Alternatives to common toothpaste

Many people are allergic against one or more ingredients contained in common toothpaste. As an alternative to industrially produced commercial toothpaste, you can try toothpaste from your local drugstore, health food or organic grocery store. But please make sure they contain fluoride!

Some people also swear by toothpaste containing neem (Azadirachta indica). Others use tooth powder as an alternative to toothpaste. Tooth powder is usually free of sodium lauryl sulphate, which can irritate the gums.
