MOUTH HYGIENE

MORE THAN JUST BRUSHING YOUR TEETH

Many people think mouth hygiene is just about brushing your teeth regularly. However, decent mouth hygiene is about a lot more than only brushing your teeth.

Why do you need a proper mouth hygiene?

The reason why we should apply mouth hygiene regularly is the prevention of oral health issues and bad breath. Oral health issues are dental caries, gum inflammation, and periodontal disease. All oral health issues arise from bacterial infections within your mouth. That´s why we need to clean teeth, gums and mouth properly and regularly!

What is mouth hygiene?

A mouth hygiene that is able to clean your teeth, gums and mouth properly must involve cleaning your teeth and gums mechanically and can include the use of mouthwash.

Mechanical cleaning not only means to only brush your teeth and gums with a toothbrush, but also the use of dental floss, interdental brushes, and dental sticks (see below). One thing is for sure: You should brush your teeth twice a day!

For cleaning your mouth from excessive bacterial overgrowth, and to further reduce dental caries and gum inflammation, you may use a tongue scraper and mouth wash (see below).

The oral flora

Your mouth is colonised by 200 to 300 different bacterial species. The whole lot of bacteria is called oral flora. Oral health issues always arise from bacterial infections within the oral flora of your mouth.

Certain bacteria species of your oral flora can cause dental caries, gum inflammation, and periodontal disease. The starting point of all these different oral health issues is the formation of dental plaque, a biofilm consisting of oral bacteria of your oral flora.

How to prevent plaque formation?

In order to prevent the formation of plaque mouth hygiene is the key. Mouth hygiene can both, reduce plaque formation and remove newly formed plaque.
